Hard Probes of Dense Matter
نویسنده
چکیده
Direct probes for the QGP must be hard enough to resolve sub-hadronic scales (≪ Λ −1 QCD) and distinguish confined and deconfined media. This can be achieved by fast colour charges (jets) and heavy quark resonances (quarkonia). After a general survey, we study quarkonia as confinement probe and show in particular that confined matter is transparent, deconfined matter opaque to J/ψ's.

Hard Probes in High-energy Heavy-ion Collisions
Hard QCD processes in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions become increasingly relevant and they can be used as probes of the dense matter formed during the violent scatterings. We will discuss how one can use these hard probes to study the properties of the dense matter and the associated phenomenologies. In particular, we study the effect of jet quenching due to medium-induced energy loss o...
متن کاملThe First International Conference on Hard and Electromagnetic Probes in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions
This is an attempt to summarize the theoretical talks given at the First International Conference ”Hard Probes ’04”, dedicated to the study of the properties of quark-gluon matter and its diagnostics with the hard processes. The talk covers the following topics: the structure of quark-gluon matter at finite temperature; the theory of nuclear wave functions at small Bjorken x; the propagation of...
متن کاملCapabilities of the CMS detector for studies of hard probes in heavy ion collisions at the LHC
The capabilities of the CMS experiment to study properties of hot and dense QCD-matter created in heavy ion collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with the perturbative processes (socalled ”hard probes”) are presented. Detailed studies from complete simulations of the CMS detectors in Pb+Pb collisions at √ s = 5.5 TeV per nucleon pair are presented in view of two hard probes: quarkonium a...
متن کاملDiagnostics of Quark-gluon Plasma in Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions by Hard
We analyze the possibilities for studying properties of dense QCD-matter, created in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions, by hard QCD-production processes, so-called ”hard” probes – heavy quarkonia, hard jets, high mass dimuons. Special attention is paid to the potential of coming heavy ion experiments on Large Hadron Collider to observe the rescattering and energy losses of hard partons in qu...
متن کاملStatistical Fluctuations as Probes of Dense Matter
The use of statistical fluctuations as probes of the microscopic dynamics of hot and dense hadronic matter is reviewed. Critical fluctuations near the critical point of QCD matter are predicted to enhance fluctuations in pionic observables. Chemical fluctuations, especially those of locally conserved quantum numbers, such as electric charge and baryon number, can probe the nature of the carrier...
